Welcome back everyone to Sisters-in-Law of Attraction. I'm Sam. And we're so, so happy you're back with us. We are finding our ways through the pivot method. We've talked about the P being your purpose. I, innovate the life you're meant to live. V, value yourself. You wouldn't be here if you didn't.
Christine Goforth(00:05.205)
And I'm Christine.
Samantha Bauer(00:22.99)
And the O is creating opportunities for yourself or seeking opportunities, keeping your eyes open for them. And then finally, we're going to talk today, about T, testing your limits, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. I wanted to share, just to start out, a couple days ago, I dropped my mom.
Christine Goforth(00:30.117)
Yes.
Christine Goforth(00:36.803)
Mmm!
Christine Goforth(00:36.803)
challenging yourself. Yep.
Samantha Bauer(00:51.118)
who's she's 79 and her cute little friend Marge who's 82 and they were going to Las Vegas. And so I dropped them off at the right at the airport and they were going to celebrate another friend's 80th birthday in Las Vegas. And so I remember and you know, I've shared before, you know, my mom is, you know, she's got some.
Christine Goforth(01:00.091)
course they were.
Christine Goforth(01:00.091)
Yes.
Christine Goforth(01:10.877)
my-

challenges. She's battling breast cancer for the third time. She's 100 % in AFibs. cute little heart is doing all kinds of fun things. And then the cancer drug has really kind of done a number on her lungs. So her breathing is not great. So she had several days before the trip, she was like, Sam, don't know. Actually, she didn't say that. She says, I'm hopeful that I'll get better. said, Mom, I don't know that I feel comfortable you going on an airplane.
Samantha Bauer(01:16.514)
kind of by yourself, well, with a bunch of eight-year-olds. Right? I know. And I said like, and again, right? And I'm just like, what if you fall and you break your hip or you have a heart attack or you can't breathe? And then I caught myself and I said, what am I doing? This is like, that's all fear-based. That's all fear-based.
Christine Goforth(01:46.809)
Right, mean, that the blind leading the block to that point.
Christine Goforth(01:46.809)
God willing, we all get there. I mean.
Christine Goforth(02:06.799)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(02:11.68)
And so I said, and I caught myself and I said, mom, I trust you. If you feel like you can go, then you go. I want you to go. And so anyhow, here are these cute little ladies on the curb as I dropping them off and grab their bags. And, you know, of course they both signed up for the wheelchair, you know, in the airport. Absolutely. And so anyhow, the image of, you know,
Christine Goforth(02:20.269)
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Right.
Christine Goforth(02:35.035)
Good!
Samantha Bauer(02:40.928)
a strange man wheeling my mother through Las Vegas, wheeling her through Sin City. Anyhow, I talked to her last night. I know, and she's like, my gosh, we're having the best time. I hit on Keno a couple times, I won on the slots. They've gone out to dinner and she's just, everybody living, living.
Christine Goforth(02:51.279)
BABY!
Christine Goforth(03:04.219)
Living. She is living. Oh, I love it. I love it.
Samantha Bauer(03:09.08)
But she said to me in the car, the whole purpose of me saying this, as we're talking about testing our limits, and she said, I have to prove to myself that I can do this. So you gotta believe she tests her limits by getting on an airplane. Yeah, and then her text to me was, I'm a traveler again. This is accessible to her, right? So all the fears of what if, you know.
Christine Goforth(03:25.209)
I'm so proud of her.
Samantha Bauer(03:37.919)
this and it's like no people are out there who who want to help you
Christine Goforth(03:43.219)
I am so thrilled to hear this because the other thing that she didn't let get in the way was ego. She let herself go with modifications, right? Like challenge yourself and also know your physical limits, right? That's very important, especially as we age. Know your physical limitations, your own personal.
Samantha Bauer(03:52.204)
Yes, yeah, right, right, right.
Samantha Bauer(04:02.311)
Absolutely.
Samantha Bauer(04:02.311)
Absolutely.
Christine Goforth(04:10.981)
joint health, whatever it is, and then challenge yourself in a way that is comfortable, know, in this situation at least, right? Because challenging yourself is intrinsically uncomfortable, but for your mom to go do that and to not say, I don't want to go, I don't want to be seen in a wheelchair, I'm not weak, I'm not that like,
Samantha Bauer(04:13.343)
Exactly.
Samantha Bauer(04:19.564)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(04:22.998)
Right, right, right.
Samantha Bauer(04:27.767)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(04:38.412)
Right. Right.
Christine Goforth(04:39.981)
No, I'm going to go, I'm going to have the best time and I'm going to do it in a way that is the most comfortable for me. Right? Good for her. I'm so proud of her.
Samantha Bauer(04:47.854)
Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, it's, you know, I mean, I understand, you know, you, you're, you've got physical and health limitations and it's scary to, to travel and you know, she's, she's 79 and so she can't really fend off, you know, attackers, you know, so she just, right. Not that, you know, we all like, you never know. mean, but
Christine Goforth(05:08.665)
Right. Sure.
Christine Goforth(05:08.665)
I mean, you never know. She's a cute lady with all kinds of, you know, all kinds of accessories and rhinestones.
Samantha Bauer(05:18.158)
You
Samantha Bauer(05:24.462)
Right? Yeah. Yeah. She's definitely, she's definitely the bling queen for sure. Yeah. No, she and she, oh, you should have seen her sparkly little tennis shoes that she had on too. They're all rhinestones, rhinestones all over them. So anyhow, I've
Christine Goforth(05:29.125)
Hahaha.
Christine Goforth(05:37.381)
This has nothing to do with anything, but did you know there's a cute little exercise group for older ladies called the silver sneakers? Is that not the cutest thing you've ever heard of? Totally off topic, but as you get older, go silver sneaker. That is the cutest thing I've ever heard of.
Samantha Bauer(05:45.23)
No. Oh my god, I love it. I love it. No, I love it.
Samantha Bauer(05:54.922)
I love it. That's perfect. That's perfect. So anyhow, so that was just like a little bit of a kind of a little story backdrop to this conversation about test testing your limits. And I came across an article by he's the CEO of Spartan Race, Joe DeSina. And, and of course, you know, Spartan Race is, you know, the world's, you know, leading obstacle.
Christine Goforth(06:22.095)
The big kahuna.
Samantha Bauer(06:22.304)
you know, race or whatever. And kind of, you know, extreme. And anyhow, so he wrote an article for Inc. magazine years ago, and he literally just talked exactly about how, you know, testing your limits. And he said that, you know, there's there's several ways that you can test your limits. And so the first is you find your way off the beaten path. And he talks about.
Christine Goforth(06:38.277)
Mm-hmm.
Samantha Bauer(06:49.838)
a man who literally walked the river Nile, like walked it and got to see like what most like vast majority of people will never see because it and also know your limits to like to your point. mean, you know, I mean, he's right. If you if you can't fend off a python, you know, and, you know, treads through a swamp, probably not for you. But
Christine Goforth(07:00.901)
will never right.
Christine Goforth(07:05.531)
Don't do it if you know you can't do it!
Christine Goforth(07:16.259)
But not for me. Not for me.
Samantha Bauer(07:19.01)
Definitely not for me either. but I love, know, in this article, you know, he really makes the point. I mean, obviously all this stuff is very extreme, but you know, find yourself off the beaten path. Meaning again, get uncomfortable. Do stuff you haven't, do shit that scares you. Do stuff. Yes. Yeah.
Christine Goforth(07:34.011)
Mm.
Christine Goforth(07:41.007)
Become an imposter. Become an imposter. Try the new thing. You're not gonna be good at it, all likelihood, right? You're not gonna have all the knowledge that you're gonna need, but starting will get you there. Not doing anything isn't gonna get you anywhere.
Samantha Bauer(07:50.029)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(07:57.544)
Exactly. Right, right. No, it's so true. And he makes the point, you've got to lose yourself to find yourself. And I love, yeah, I absolutely love that. And getting yourself, you know, like I said, off the beaten path where you're just kind of losing yourself in these new, you know.
Samantha Bauer(07:57.544)
these new activities or opportunities or actions that, know, to really learn about yourself and discover, discover maybe strengths that you didn't know you had, you know, and, so anyhow, and then of course our favorite concept is, you know, the fear of failure. And he just said, you know, right, embrace failure.
Christine Goforth(08:29.178)
Right, right.
Christine Goforth(08:45.135)
You're gonna fail. Assume that you're gonna fail. Period.
Samantha Bauer(08:48.61)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. so really and truly, like learning how to celebrate failure is kind of where you need to be. it's not fail. Failure is, know, yes, it can be disappointment, but failure tells you that you're doing something right in the sense that you're
Christine Goforth(09:03.013)
Absolutely.
Samantha Bauer(09:15.862)
testing yourself, you're pushing yourself, you're challenging yourself.
Christine Goforth(09:19.557)
I think too, you look at life, right? And we all know, it's common knowledge, bad things are going to happen in life. Like death happens, taxes, and then all the other bad stuff, right? Bad stuff is going to happen. Good stuff is also going to happen. You can't look at your life and go, I am never going to fail.
Samantha Bauer(09:39.63)
All right. Yep.
Christine Goforth(09:47.555)
No, you have to look at failures just like you look at life, right? I look at life and okay, bad things will happen. Good things are gonna happen. Guess what? You're gonna fail. Like nobody has gone through their life and not failed at something. Assume that life is full of failures. Your life is going to be full of failures and successes. But the second you get comfortable with like, okay, it could fail and then we'll just go on and try the next thing. Okay.
Samantha Bauer(10:16.534)
Right, right.
Christine Goforth(10:17.189)
Great, that attachment to it, attach yourself to the value of the work that you're putting in. Don't attach yourself to the actual end result, right?
Samantha Bauer(10:27.34)
Right. Exactly. Exactly. And most of the time the failure is, you know, extrinsic anyway. And it doesn't matter because the extrinsic failure is the intrinsic success. Right. And yeah. And yeah. So anyhow, that fear thing always creeps right up. And then he says, you know, distance, go the distance makes you stronger.
Christine Goforth(10:33.796)
Right, right.
Christine Goforth(10:40.111)
success. Yeah, absolutely. I love that.
Samantha Bauer(10:56.267)
Right? So you, so that's where the discipline is, is that you can't just like at the first turn go, yeah, I guess that's not for me. So I'm just going to move on. It's like, no, like it's that stick to it is this, right? You know, got to, you got to stick to it. You know, you can't just go, you can't just give up. And I mean, you and I totally could have given up after the first, you know, episode of the podcast, right? We were like, we didn't sound great or.
Christine Goforth(11:11.267)
Right, right. Yes, yeah.
Christine Goforth(11:21.083)
100 % We don't really know how to do it. I don't know.
Samantha Bauer(11:25.388)
There was too many, you know, too many ums, too many filler words, right? But we fumbled and bumbled through it and you know, and you learn along the way. It's the whole point. It's the whole point of doing this is to, you know, get good at something, be good at something and then get great at it, you know? And that's the only way.
Christine Goforth(11:35.481)
Yes, exactly.
Christine Goforth(11:43.555)
And I think that people, like people want to watch that. think people want to see, like, I can't tell you the amount of, I I'm a big podcast listener. I cannot tell you the amount of podcasts that I have listened to that at the beginning. mean, people knew ish about it, but now they're huge. And I'm like, this is so cool to watch them go from like this, this small community on a podcast.
Samantha Bauer(11:47.944)
absolutely.
Samantha Bauer(12:07.544)
Right.
Christine Goforth(12:13.371)
And now they've taken that podcast and they've created a TV series or they've created this whole other. And it's like, this is so amazing. and, and it happened because they weren't afraid. They did it assuming that they were going to succeed and there would be failures along the way, but that in the end it would be successful. Right.
Samantha Bauer(12:13.505)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(12:17.975)
Sure.
Samantha Bauer(12:22.573)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(12:29.549)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(12:35.82)
Right, the beautiful imperfection of it, because nobody wants perfect. Nobody wants totally polished. And because that's a complete, number one is not real. And we've got, excuse me, we've got plenty of like not real things coming at us, right?
Christine Goforth(12:39.301)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(12:39.301)
No!
Christine Goforth(12:52.658)
my God, you can't even tell what's real and what's fake anymore. Yeah. We're real.
Samantha Bauer(12:55.47)
Oh, God. Yeah. And so, yeah, I mean, we are definitely real. So anyhow, go the distance, don't give up. I mean, I guess that's kind of the takeaway when you're testing your limits, you're going to have bumps along the way, but be committed to the long term and go the distance. He also talks about... No, no, no, no, no, go ahead.
Christine Goforth(13:17.872)
Well, and it's like that, go ahead, you're good. It just reminds me of like the, in a negotiation, is the start of the negotiation, right? Like that first turn is not, it's not a, isn't gonna work. It's a figure it out and then you'll get some straight road and then it's gonna curve again. But you figured out the last curve so you could probably do it again. So keep going, right?
Samantha Bauer(13:29.38)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(13:40.126)
Exactly.
Samantha Bauer(13:40.126)
Yes. Yes. No. Excellent point. Yeah. No, no, for sure. He also talks about, and I love this because, you know, just intense, starve to reveal the beast within you. Starve to reveal the beast within you. So again, that's pretty intense. But I, you know, I like a good intense concept.
Christine Goforth(13:59.61)
Ooh, okay.
Christine Goforth(14:05.659)
Yeah, but I mean, we're no stranger to it.
Samantha Bauer(14:13.548)
Right? And it takes us back, Christine, to our conversation with Brian when we talk about the comfort crisis. And that's the whole point, like, starve yourself, meaning get uncomfortable, right, to reveal something, you know, in yourself.
Christine Goforth(14:26.305)
Get uncomfortable. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(14:33.838)
He said that desperation can make people access, you know, part of them that is suppressed for most of us, right? So if you get to like when you're desperate, when you're hungry, when you're starving, you know, it reveals exactly. It's like, what am I made of? How far can I go? I?
Christine Goforth(14:40.513)
for sure.
Christine Goforth(14:46.329)
It's that grit that reveals itself. It's that grit.
Samantha Bauer(14:56.32)
Again, within reason, you know, how far can I go? How far can I, can I test my own limits? Because limits, our own self limits are self constructed. I can't do that because my mom could have, my mom could have easily done that. I can't go because I'm having a hard time breathing or I can't go because you know, my heart's not strong and I'm having a hard time walking. But,
Christine Goforth(15:04.261)
right.
Samantha Bauer(15:25.51)
She definitely tests her limits and now it's opened up a whole new world because she's talking about going on a cruise for her 80th birthday with her, these, these little ladies, which I think is hilarious. Right. Yeah. So anyhow, you know, yeah. And so it's in that testing of your limits is, that whole discovery piece, right? You're going to discover things in you that you would not, but for this really hard thing that you did, you know, and it's, yeah, I mean, we've all,
Christine Goforth(15:36.037)
She has to, my god.
Christine Goforth(15:36.037)
ever.
Christine Goforth(15:51.365)
hard time. Absolutely.
Samantha Bauer(15:55.344)
had self-reflection moments when we go, we look back and go like, oh my God, I cannot believe I did that. You know, that's crazy that I did that.
Christine Goforth(16:01.635)
Right, right. Like that's the same. I'm the same person who did that. How many times I've said that? Like, wait a minute. Wow.
Samantha Bauer(16:07.448)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(16:07.448)
Right, right. And it reminds me actually, again, going back to Rebound, writing Rebound, I did a thing called Pitch Slam, and I think I talked about it before, where I go down to, you know, went down to Santa Monica and I had a stand in line and, you know, with all these writers and we had, you know, basically.
Samantha Bauer(16:07.448)
30 seconds to stand in line and pitch, right? And so, and I just, I reflect back on that and I was, I was shaking in my boots, right? I mean, I was, it's a very intimidating, you know, experience. And I just remember just thinking back because once I did the first one,
Christine Goforth(16:32.645)
Mmm, so nerve wracking.
Samantha Bauer(16:50.86)
It was like, I could do this all day long. I know I've talked about this before. so it's just, it just, it, again, when you test your limit, it just makes you stronger.
Christine Goforth(16:52.964)
All day long. Yeah.
Christine Goforth(17:00.485)
It reignites something in you that's like, I can do this. Like I just proved to myself that I can do it. If you think proving someone else wrong feels good, try proving yourself wrong. It feels really damn good.
Samantha Bauer(17:03.158)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(17:03.158)
Exactly.
Samantha Bauer(17:11.487)
Hahaha!
Samantha Bauer(17:11.487)
Right? And so anyhow, so, so to see this last point on testing your limits, he says that some races have no finish line. You know, we've talked about this, right? I mean, it's, it's, it's especially with, with the pivot method, right? I mean, we're hashtag pivoting all the time in our life. Right.
Christine Goforth(17:30.595)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(17:30.595)
throughout life, right? I mean, I don't, definitely don't want to be like the same person I was in high school. I mean, right? Like, like, or college or like, no, the whole point of growing up is becoming new versions of yourself and, then figuring out who they are. And there are seasons of life where we don't have that time to
Samantha Bauer(17:40.827)
Exactly. Right? Well, yeah. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(17:51.97)
Yes, yeah.
Christine Goforth(18:03.001)
get to know the new versions of ourselves. And when that time does appear, or we actively make time and are intentional, then I think that that's...
Samantha Bauer(18:06.221)
Yes.
Samantha Bauer(18:22.574)
You
Samantha Bauer(18:27.542)
I'm
Christine Goforth(18:28.783)
so sorry. just, think that I need to stop looking at my notes because they're actually messing me up more. Honestly, it's messing me up more.
Samantha Bauer(18:35.286)
I know this is young.
Christine Goforth(18:42.171)
Well, I lost my thought now. Greg, I'm so sorry. I was...
Samantha Bauer(18:44.674)
Well, so I go back to what you shared about the crossroads. There's a piece, yeah.
Christine Goforth(18:51.299)
yes. the crossroads between testing yourself and then growth is where the magic happens. That's where when we take our time to figure out what it is that we want, to test ourselves to get there. And then it's like you all of a sudden realize like, look at all this growth that has happened.
Samantha Bauer(19:01.644)
Yes. Yeah.
Christine Goforth(19:20.731)
And that is where the magic lies, right?
Samantha Bauer(19:25.302)
Yes. Love that. Love it. Yeah. Because what I mean, what's the alternative is like not growing, not growing, not learning. Like that's so boring, you know, and, and
Christine Goforth(19:28.239)
Yeah, I just.
Christine Goforth(19:35.363)
Right. Right. Not growing, not learning. Thank you. So, so not growing, not learning and not meeting the, the versions of yourself. So then when it's, when it is time, right, when you have that time to create the pockets, then you get to, you get to do those things. You get, you get to say what I have an hour right now. How do I want to spend that?
Samantha Bauer(19:52.45)
Yep.
Samantha Bauer(20:03.618)
Right.
Christine Goforth(20:03.833)
Right? And in using the questions, the prompts, right? To say like, what do I really want? What do I really enjoy? How do people perceive me? And then seeing where you wanna go from there and making a plan.
Samantha Bauer(20:14.592)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Exactly. Right. Exactly. Yeah. No, and again, it goes back to that whole beacon, like knowing...
Samantha Bauer(20:14.592)
knowing generally where you want to head, because that will drive a lot of your choices and your decisions throughout all this work. But yeah, mean, we could talk about the pivot method forever. And I think it's just fun because it really resonates with folks. People were constantly having to pivot in life, because life is.
Christine Goforth(20:49.795)
Mm-hmm. And it's not like, it's just this one group of people who this will affect. no, it's everybody. This is for everyone.
Samantha Bauer(20:56.522)
Right. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(20:56.522)
much. Yeah, if you you're a human being living a life, this is what you constantly have to do is hashtag pivot, right? And so anyhow, so we, we could talk about this forever. But our time is up. And I'm just I know I can't wait till the next time. And thank you all for being here. You know, we are so happy and thrilled to be, you know, sharing this journey with you. And learning, just learning and exploring and growing. And it's it's all just good stuff. So thank you all.
Christine Goforth(21:27.743)
love building the community up and yeah, it just is so fun. This is such important work to me and I know it is to you, Sam, and it just feels really good to be able to share our stories and how we navigate through all of this.
Samantha Bauer(21:28.528)
Yes.
Samantha Bauer(21:45.356)
Right, exactly. And don't forget to check us out on our website, sistersinlawpod.com. And you can connect with us there. So please, we want to hear from you. So make sure you do that. So check us out. But until then, we can't wait to welcome you back next time. This is Sisters in Law of Attraction. I'm Sam. And we'll see you next time. Bye.
Christine Goforth(22:04.047)
And I'm Christine.
