Inspired by a Michael J. Fox quote that stopped Sam mid-scroll — “With gratitude, optimism is sustainable” — Sam and Christine get real about staying positive when life is hard. Sam shares what it looked like to coach her mom through a difficult health season, Christine brings wisdom about reframing challenges as opportunities, and together they break down the difference between genuine optimism and toxic positivity. Real optimism isn’t about pretending everything is fine — it’s about owning what happened, choosing your path forward, and leaning into community and connection to carry you through.
Highlights from this episode
With gratitude, optimism is sustainable.
There's a fine line between optimism and toxic positivity. It's not about pretending bad things aren't happening. It's how you respond to the thing that is happening, and saying this happened, but it's not who I am. I get to decide the path forward.
Everything is temporary. Whether it's good or bad, it's not going to last forever. The world on the other side of that is waiting for the gracious, full of gratitude, joyous person that you are.
You can visit, but we don't live there. It's important to visit sadness or pain, but don't live there, because that is when you get stuck and it is so hard to get back out.

Samantha Bauer(00:01.075)
Welcome back to Sisters in Law of Attraction, I'm Sam.
Christine Goforth(00:05.027)
And I'm Christine.
Samantha Bauer(00:07.03)
And if this is your first time with us, welcome. But we welcome all of you back who have been with us along this journey. are we're just kind of learning and practicing and we are so excited about the community that we're building around, you know, just living in the lane of joy and gratitude and understanding that with your own thoughts, you can create your own reality and just getting back into that sort of driver's seat.
Christine Goforth(00:10.871)
Hello?
Christine Goforth(00:36.023)
Yes. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(00:36.108)
Right, Christine? And just knowing, you know, kind of going back to, you know, your original awakening, right? Where we started this. And how far you've come.
Christine Goforth(00:42.337)
Yes. Yeah.
Christine Goforth(00:47.325)
my goodness. I feel like a different person from then to now. just all of the tools that I have created, accumulated, learned about, researched all of it, just at the ready, even to this day.
Christine Goforth(00:47.325)
are so beneficial and I lean on them sometimes more than others. But it is, so important.
Samantha Bauer(01:16.472)
Hahaha!
Samantha Bauer(01:20.95)
Yeah, and it's, but also it's easy to slip, right? Because, you know, life is hard, right? Life, like, there's just life, right? And just things are coming at us left and right, right? You're in the middle of raising, you know, two teenagers, you know, and I really and truly thought, like, once I launched my kids, I'm like, yeah, I'm free! But it's like, right? It's like big, big kids, big problems.
Christine Goforth(01:25.121)
Absolutely. Because life. Because life. Period.
Christine Goforth(01:25.121)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(01:38.476)
Yep.
Christine Goforth(01:45.699)
For free.
Christine Goforth(01:49.85)
big problems. Mm-hmm.
Samantha Bauer(01:51.094)
Yeah, and so, you know, just helping them sort of navigate into their young adult lives and going back and realizing like, yeah, I remember like starting out in my career and totally messing up and going like, my God, and talking to my daughter. Right, I totally thought there was the other world. I mean, I remember I was working for a public affairs firm in Sacramento and
Christine Goforth(02:04.781)
Yeah. Yeah. This is the end of the world. Yeah. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(02:18.606)
I literally put, I don't even remember what the information was, but I put the wrong information in a press release. My boss was so upset and so mad and he said, you have to physically drive this corrected press release to every news station. And we're not just talking Sacramento. Like it was like.
Samantha Bauer(02:45.272)
counties in and around Sacramento and I remember being in my cute little car, my little yellow car, literally crying and just I know and shaking, realizing like I thought this was like the end. So I guess the point with this is that, you know, watching our kids getting to their young adults and starting their careers, they are going to have the mess ups.
Christine Goforth(02:47.551)
my gosh. Sam.
Christine Goforth(03:14.195)
Mm-hmm.
Samantha Bauer(03:14.306)
they are gonna have the scripts that we had to go through and it's just part of it and so it's like you cannot, easier said than done, you can't freak, you can't freak out, you gotta breathe.
Christine Goforth(03:17.357)
Absolutely.
Christine Goforth(03:25.153)
No, yeah. And just remember everything is temporary. Everything is temporary. So whether it's good or bad, it's not going to last forever. I was just having a conversation with some students the other day who they came to me with school drama. And they're coming to me and I said, listen, you guys know that I don't math.
Samantha Bauer(03:31.81)
Yeah. Right.
Samantha Bauer(03:38.474)
Exactly, exactly.
Samantha Bauer(03:49.122)
Yeah.
Christine Goforth(03:54.849)
and I don't physics, but I give really good life advice. like, here's the thing, it's going to get better, right? Like whatever issue it is, it feels like the whole world, right? And it is your whole world in that moment. But what you have to remember is the actual world that's on the other side of that, that's waiting for the gracious
Samantha Bauer(03:59.733)
Yes.
Samantha Bauer(03:59.733)
Right? Right.
Samantha Bauer(04:14.605)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(04:20.524)
right.
Christine Goforth(04:23.843)
full of gratitude, joyous person that you are.
Samantha Bauer(04:25.41)
Yep.
Samantha Bauer(04:29.448)
Exactly, exactly. That's a perfect segue into what we're talking about today and that is, you know, sustaining optimism. know, you and you know, you look at other folks, other people and go, my gosh, like why do they always think that, you know, the sun is always shining and it's, you know, unicorns and rainbows and then, and then there's the others that like literally everything is wrong. We all know, we all know, we all know the kind.
Christine Goforth(04:37.684)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(04:54.101)
Right? Yeah. Right. huh. I, huh. Where I like to say they could win, they could win billions in the lottery and they would complain about how many, how much in taxes they have to pay. And you're like, you just won billions. Why are you complaining? Like, yeah, I just, I, you know, I heard on a different podcast today really quick, just a, something that I thought, man, I'm going to use that over and over. She said,
Samantha Bauer(05:06.89)
Yes!
Samantha Bauer(05:16.224)
Yeah, yeah.
Christine Goforth(05:23.979)
that growing up her mom would tell her whenever she had some issue that was the end of the world, if everybody put their problems on the table, you would take yours back so quickly. And I was like, if everybody laid their, mm-hmm, if everyone laid their problems out, you would pick yours back up in a heartbeat. And I was like, that is brilliantly put.
Samantha Bauer(05:30.861)
Yep.
Samantha Bauer(05:36.974)
I love that. Right? Power of perspective.
Samantha Bauer(05:46.765)
Yep.
Christine Goforth(05:52.899)
I'm, that's sticking with me forever. Like, I love that.
Samantha Bauer(05:53.002)
Yes. I love it. No, it's but it's so true, right? It's just it's yeah in the moment. It's it's larger than life. It's the end of the world. But then once you can, know, do you again attending to those thoughts putting it to back into perspective and going back to gratitude. So so the sort of the backdrop for this conversation actually, I think it was last Friday night, Christine, I text you and I'm like, oh my God.
Christine Goforth(06:03.626)
Ahem.
Christine Goforth(06:11.969)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(06:21.213)
I just saw a clip of Michael J Fox who yes, love, love, love him. Obviously, you know, challenged with Parkinson's and, but just so has done such great with his life, right? Creating his foundation and, but anyhow, I think it was an interview with Jane Pauli and it literally stopped me in my tracks and I'd spent out there for a while. Cause obviously I went back and I fact checked it and.
Christine Goforth(06:23.459)
bless.
Christine Goforth(06:48.535)
Yeah, of course. Well, listen, even if it was, I mean, it's still amazing.
Samantha Bauer(06:48.758)
I want to make sure this was not like totally made up and it's even if it was it's a good one right and he said with gratitude optimism is sustainable right and I just it stopped me in my tracks I was like yeah with gratitude optimum optimism is sustainable and yeah and I and I
Christine Goforth(07:03.999)
Mm-hmm. I love that.
Christine Goforth(07:14.883)
It makes so much sense when you put it like that.
Samantha Bauer(07:17.718)
I just remember I was texting you and I was like, we were in Dallas visiting my son and my son and husband were out and I was in the hotel by myself and just scrolling. And by the way, also like you just randomly crying. Like, so I mean, maybe that it's a whole nother podcast with this whole perimenopause thing. But yeah, something, something's up. Something's up.
Christine Goforth(07:31.363)
Okay. Uh-huh. We need to have like a guest doctor. Uh-huh. Something's in the water over here.
Samantha Bauer(07:43.182)
So but anyhow, I just stopped me in my tracks. I remember texting you like my god Christine like this like this this this this and it you know, it really It brought me back to you know, helping my mom, know through her her health challenges right now You know, we've talked about her before cute little mom third time around with with breast cancer and all kinds of other, you know challenges, but you know
Christine Goforth(07:49.675)
It's so good.
Christine Goforth(08:05.719)
the best.
Samantha Bauer(08:12.642)
We are trying to get her stronger because she has lost a lot of weight and potentially having surgery. I just remember looking at her and going, she's like, I don't have any energy. And she's lost a ton of weight. And I said, OK, sister, enough of Mr. Nice Guy. We are going to focus on you eating because here's the deal.
Christine Goforth(08:16.352)
Yes.
Samantha Bauer(08:40.366)
Here's the optimism, here's the gratitude, and then we'll get optimistic. You're grateful, you should be grateful. You have a mouth, you have an esophagus, you have a stomach, you have a digestive system. Guess what? Go, teeth, go out there and get yourself a burger.
Christine Goforth(08:42.861)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(08:47.607)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(08:51.309)
teeth.
Christine Goforth(08:57.997)
And how lucky you can have whatever you want.
Samantha Bauer(09:01.152)
Right. So I said, just go eat. that's, I said, that's something to be grateful for right now. Instead of focusing on, my gosh, I'm so weak. I've lost all my muscle mass. I'm so, I've lost too much weight. I can't, you know, gain. But you know what you can do? You can eat. Yeah. And so, and then she's so funny. I picked up, she has these cute little two pound weights. God bless her.
Christine Goforth(09:04.279)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(09:18.241)
You can try, you can try to gain it.
Christine Goforth(09:28.131)
perfect for
Samantha Bauer(09:29.19)
Right? And I said, okay sister, this is what's gonna happen. When you're sitting in your little chair, you're watching your TV, whatever, you're gonna do three sets of eight, is what I said. But she decided that three sets of five is enough on her bicep curls. And I said, then next week we're gonna work, right, baby steps, and next week we're gonna add in the shoulder press, and then she does do her little bike, but.
Christine Goforth(09:42.188)
Okay.
Christine Goforth(09:48.183)
Baby steps.
Samantha Bauer(09:56.27)
She said, Sam, I literally have to press my leg down because I don't have any strength in my legs. I said, okay, so we're going to dial it. We're going to dial it back. We're going to dial it back to zero. No resistance because she was like on two. And I said, you got to build back, right? So you got to again. And so literally the look in her eye when she looked at me and she just smiled and she said, okay, coach Boomer.
Christine Goforth(10:03.459)
Yeah.
Christine Goforth(10:03.459)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(10:11.831)
Yeah. Yep.
Samantha Bauer(10:21.358)
And so Boomer is what my name was growing up because I always would go boom. So coach Boomer and she goes, I got this. I got this. Right. So gratitude. Start with what we got. OK. Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, the boo hoo. Here's the boo hoo. You shit. You got cancer. You're losing a lot of weight. You can't breathe. So but here are the things you can do.
Christine Goforth(10:26.499)
Coach Boomer, my God. I love that.
Christine Goforth(10:36.067)
Mm-hmm. I love that.
Christine Goforth(10:41.207)
Here's the thing, yep. I like to, yep. Well, and here's the thing. I tell my kids, obviously not with anything this serious. You can visit, but we don't live there. You can visit. It's important to visit because you can learn things from the visit of sadness or pain or why me living in your pity party. Visit that.
Samantha Bauer(10:54.198)
Yeah, I love that. And you've said that before. I absolutely love it. Yes.
Christine Goforth(11:10.531)
but don't live there because that is when you get stuck in it and it is so hard to get back out. so for your mom, obviously it's much more serious than anything else, but it still holds where it's like you can from now until, you know, until whenever you can sit here and
Samantha Bauer(11:10.624)
Yeah. Right.
Samantha Bauer(11:10.624)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(11:10.624)
Yes.
Samantha Bauer(11:37.293)
Right.
Christine Goforth(11:40.439)
focus on the things that you've lost or you can, like you said, be grateful for the fact that you even have the opportunity to gain some of that back, right? You have all of those things to be able to try. And, you know, I followed somebody on Instagram who went through a
Samantha Bauer(11:52.387)
Exactly. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(11:58.68)
Right.
Christine Goforth(12:08.383)
she had acute myeloid leukemia and they told her she would not make it through the weekend. She was a mother of five. would not make it through the weekend. She was like 35, 36 and five years later she is cancer-free. So all that to say, but her whole thing was it's not a challenge, it's an opportunity. How can I use this opportunity?
Samantha Bauer(12:10.859)
Okay.
Samantha Bauer(12:14.626)
Wow. my God.
Samantha Bauer(12:24.332)
Amazing. Yep.
Samantha Bauer(12:32.716)
Yep, absolutely.
Christine Goforth(12:36.343)
to grow, help other people, to whatever it is. So it's, again, just that mind shift of, know what? I have tomorrow, or I have today, and so with today right now, I'm gonna, in her case, I'm gonna get up and dance. That's what she did. so.
Samantha Bauer(12:40.194)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(12:46.52)
Yep. Right.
Samantha Bauer(12:52.622)
Right. Yep. And also being around, you know, positive people when you're sick like that is so critical. Now obviously in her age, you know, range right now, you know, she's 79.
Christine Goforth(13:00.642)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(13:00.642)
It is so important.
Christine Goforth(13:00.642)
Sure.
Samantha Bauer(13:09.038)
And she still goes to the Bridge Club. She's a bridge master. I mean, she's amazing. But she's kind of, I'm laughing because she's found these new group of friends. And so now they have a breakfast club. And now she's going to breakfast before the bridge. she's really, and she literally called me two, right, two nights ago. And she said, oh my God, Sam.
Christine Goforth(13:11.797)
Amazing.
Christine Goforth(13:18.658)
Yes.
Christine Goforth(13:18.658)
my
Christine Goforth(13:27.841)
It's so important.
Samantha Bauer(13:34.36)
You know, she's just laughing and she said we had so much fun, it totally took her mind off of all the negative stuff. then, you know, mean, you know, her age bracket, she's got friends that are really struggling with their health too. But I'm like, Mom, you're you don't feel good. So you can't be around those who keep on bringing you down and only want to just mire in their bullshit, you know, and you got to be around people that
Christine Goforth(13:48.621)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(14:03.604)
Not like, you know, Mary Lou, like how are you doing? just out of my mom's name. Cute little Mary Lou. Anyhow. no, it's okay. Yeah. Anyhow, cute little Mary Lou. You know.
Christine Goforth(14:09.697)
we can bleep it if you want.
Samantha Bauer(14:21.078)
It's not about the pity party. She doesn't want the pity party. Right? And she got a little bit of that, you know, at the Bridge Club and she got super sad when somebody made a comment about how much weight she's lost and she's like, I don't want that. And so anyhow, so these, these, her new little friend group, right? They're, they're just, they're vibing and they're having fun. And so it's really, really important.
Christine Goforth(14:32.13)
Right.
Christine Goforth(14:41.013)
And I swear that that and I'm sure there's scientific research though I haven't looked it up, but there is something about having that positivity in that community that can do in some cases more, more good than harm versus a medication that could help but do more harm than good.
Samantha Bauer(14:54.691)
Yep.
Samantha Bauer(15:06.286)
Absolutely.
Christine Goforth(15:09.019)
meaning it is so good for her mental state, even if it's for, even if it's just for a night and she goes back to being a little sad, right? Or a little nervous or anxious or whatever it is, but to be able to have something to look forward to, to be able to have people to talk to is so important to
Samantha Bauer(15:17.666)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(15:27.448)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(15:31.427)
Right.
Christine Goforth(15:35.425)
to, it is absolutely a key part of longevity of life and, yeah.
Samantha Bauer(15:40.51)
absolutely. just, right. We talk about energy, right? Energy, just the energy that you get from from others. We talked about that, you know, with with Coach Rob in a previous episode, right? It's he's created an environment where like optimism and positivity is the name of the game. It's like it's it's there's no other way. And so when you write, when you walk in, you can walk in just feeling, you know,
Christine Goforth(15:53.676)
Yeah.
Christine Goforth(16:01.463)
There's no other way. There's just not.
Samantha Bauer(16:09.302)
totally grumbly and whatever and something really bad just happened but you've got an energy in the room now not only with Coach Rob but with you your workout friends right and so that it all goes without saying it doesn't mean that we were fake with each other I mean we know what's going on in each other's lives you know and so it's not fake that way but it's also when you're working out and you know
Christine Goforth(16:14.051)
Mm.
Christine Goforth(16:19.063)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(16:25.087)
No. Sure.
Samantha Bauer(16:34.838)
you're feeling good, right? And so you just, pick up on that energy. And so it's so important. So optimism, right? It doesn't happen in a vacuum. And if you're not totally happy all the time or optimistic or grateful all the time, that's okay too, right? To your point.
Christine Goforth(16:44.365)
Mm-hmm.
Christine Goforth(16:52.541)
Right. It's because I think that there's a fine line of, of optimism and toxic positivity where, everything's perfect all the time. And no, it's not, but it's, it's not about whether or not bad things are happening. If you're pretending that they're not, we all know you're faking it. It's, it's how do you respond to the thing that is happening?
Samantha Bauer(17:02.22)
Right. Right. Fake phony, fake, yeah.
Samantha Bauer(17:16.279)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(17:21.47)
Exactly. Right. Yeah.
Christine Goforth(17:22.845)
and just saying this thing happened, but it's not who I am. I have to own that it happened, but I get to decide the path forward. I get to decide what to do with the information or how to perceive it, how to think about it, how to whatever it is, move forward. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(17:35.96)
Exactly.
Samantha Bauer(17:44.398)
Right, right, and compartmentalized too. And I think that whole compartmentalizing is so important because, I mean, we learn.
Christine Goforth(17:48.664)
Mm.
Christine Goforth(17:53.635)
Sam, I swear I was just gonna talk about commercializing. That's so crazy. Go ahead, I'm sorry, that's wild. are high-vibing big time. go ahead, I'm sorry.
Samantha Bauer(17:57.39)
Hey, this is what happens when we're on the same vibration, No, no, you go. I just intro'd it, so compartmentalizing.
Christine Goforth(18:10.499)
No, I just, when you were saying it's not about being fake with your workout friends, it's about compartmentalizing and saying, yes, we have bad things happening, but in this room right now, I am, I'm feeling really good energy. And who are we to then bring our own, and kind of be a force against that. And if that's your, if that's how you're naturally feeling, then of course honor that.
Samantha Bauer(18:21.506)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(18:25.453)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(18:29.269)
Eww. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(18:33.784)
Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(18:37.848)
Sure. Right.
Christine Goforth(18:38.615)
But it's very hard not to be transformed by that energy, that positivity. That is a big force that is very hard to not be pulled into, which is a good thing. But yeah, it's not being fake. I think it's about compartmentalizing, like you said.
Samantha Bauer(18:44.172)
agreed.
Samantha Bauer(18:52.384)
Agreed. Yeah. Yeah.
Samantha Bauer(18:52.384)
Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's and I think we do obviously we some of us learn it more than others as we you know grow into adulthood because you know, we look about our back at our you know, teenage kids They can't compartmentalize right the whole world is coming down because around this one single issue and it's like yeah Okay, that kind of sucks, but we're just gonna put it over here We're gonna park it and then we're gonna and then we're gonna deal with this over here or we're gonna now we're just gonna and again, it's not
Christine Goforth(19:09.731)
Right? No. Yup.
Christine Goforth(19:20.213)
Right.
Samantha Bauer(19:25.976)
fake and phony, go put on a happy face, also meet the moment. Right? You can touch and go, like you said, visit it, but don't live there. you know, when my daughter had called me a week ago, you know, she was spiraling and she was I don't know what's wrong with me. Okay, stop right there. There's actually nothing wrong with you. There's actually nothing wrong with you. That's number one. Like, it's okay.
Christine Goforth(19:31.788)
Right.
Christine Goforth(19:36.61)
bright.
Christine Goforth(19:49.213)
Right. That's that's number one. Right.
Samantha Bauer(19:55.476)
right now to not be okay. Like that's an okay thing. But like you said, right, but like you said, visit it, touch and go. then so she was on her way to her power life or whatever, the hot yoga thing. And I just told her, said, there's nothing that a good sweat or a good workout will not, I mean, at least, right? I mean, it's right, because again, what are you doing? You're getting into your breath work.
Christine Goforth(19:58.268)
Mm-hmm. Right. No one's forcing you out of this.
Christine Goforth(20:13.098)
yeah.
Christine Goforth(20:19.405)
Help, at least help a little bit, right? Mm-hmm. And you're moving that energy out of it, out of your body.
Samantha Bauer(20:25.762)
Right? You're moving exactly right. Like you like to take a shower and wash the day away and drain away. How about you sweat it out?
Christine Goforth(20:34.391)
Yep. Sweat it out, rinse it off. However you want to visualize that, right? And I'm just noticing the time too. Gosh. my goodness. my goodness.
Samantha Bauer(20:45.514)
I know! So to our listeners, we were kind of all over the place because we have so much to say and so much to share and we're having so much fun with you. So thanks for being with us. Yeah, I know, right? yeah, we love this. So keep reaching out. We love hearing from you. And just remember, in the words of Michael J. Fox, with gratitude, optimism is...
Christine Goforth(20:59.811)
Really? my gosh, it's so fun.
Samantha Bauer(21:14.998)
sustainable. So thanks for joining Scissors and Law of Attraction. I'm Sam and we'll see you next time. Bye!
