★ About this episode

The hosts address mental and spiritual clutter, discussing the distinction between spirituality and religion while exploring how constant noise prevents alignment and connection.

Highlights from this episode

I don't care if you call it God, the universe, source energy, or a spirit guide. I believe those are all the same things. They all have the same purpose: to get the ego out of the way and to say it's not all about me.
— Christine Goforth
We are basically distracting ourselves into spiritual oblivion. Our busy and digitally obsessed lives are the biggest threat to our spiritual life.
— Samantha Bauer
The noise pollution is crazy because we just get used to it. You have to purposely say no, I'm just going to stand here in silence.
— Christine Goforth
One person's meditation is another person's prayer, and vice versa. The most important thing is to live in the white space, because that's where you make those connections.

Samantha Bauer(00:01.441)
Welcome back to Sisters-in-Law of Attraction. I'm Sam. And we're so happy you're back with us. know, Christine, last time we were talking, we got a little bit into just kind of how different you and I are just as people and how we approach life. I think I said that my middle name was intense and your middle name is Chell.

Christine Goforth(00:05.432)
Christine.

Christine Goforth(00:16.564)
Yes.

Christine Goforth(00:22.35)
Yeah, think that about sums it up.

Samantha Bauer(00:26.655)
just sums it up. But honestly, I think, you know, when I started doing this work, you know, a decade ago, I realized that I was too intense. Like I was like, I just figured I mean, my whole idea of, you know, like, I literally can make things happen. Like if I just worked hard enough, then I can control the outcome of everything. And I can, you know, and so so that was where the intensity came in. So I did I have learned to be a little bit more like you and be more chill.

Christine Goforth(00:56.364)
Just a little bit more gel.

Samantha Bauer(00:59.051)
Just to allow and to find, again, we talk about being in that lane of joy and gratitude so that you can allow yourself to be what we call in a high frequency state so that you're high vibration, so you're connecting with source energy, God, whatever you align yourself with. Yeah, yeah, and I think, I started thinking a little bit more about

Christine Goforth(01:06.126)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(01:21.196)
Whatever you call it. Yep.

Samantha Bauer(01:27.595)
this whole, you know, false dichotomy of spirituality and religion, right? And so, so when I started learning more about this work and, you know, the things that I can do to get more in that sort of high vibey state so that I can allow God, the universe to deliver what is meant for me, you know, I, it was serious. It was a little, it was,

Christine Goforth(01:34.158)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(01:45.902)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(01:50.496)
Mm. Right.

Samantha Bauer(01:57.378)
foreign to me, quite frankly. know, just, you know, again, grew up with formal religion, you know, practicing Catholic, you know, the whole thing. And so what I love too is that I think in you doing this work, you've really been able to really connect, you know, with your spirituality and it's really allowed you to kind of develop that part of your life.

Christine Goforth(01:58.712)
Mm. Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(02:04.085)
Right.

Christine Goforth(02:19.372)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(02:24.365)
Absolutely. Well, and I think, excuse me, forever. I grew up Catholic. I, you know, got confirmed and all of that. and, but I, I think that, and it's not something that I have thought necessarily super hard about. just didn't feel aligned with.

Samantha Bauer(02:37.643)
Yep. Yep.

Christine Goforth(02:53.577)
all of the, the, the idea that you have to be at church and you have to, but I also believed that there is something bigger than us. We're not just here for ourselves. And, and so I started thinking in terms of, I don't really care what you call it. And this is, this is how we raise our kids.

Samantha Bauer(02:58.785)
Right. Right.

Christine Goforth(03:21.291)
I don't care if you call it God, I don't care if you call it the universe, source energy, a spirit guide. I believe that those are all the same things. They all have the same purpose, right? And that's to get the ego out of the way and to say it's not all about me.

Samantha Bauer(03:39.639)
Right, right.

Samantha Bauer(03:46.337)
Yep. Right.

Christine Goforth(03:48.458)
It's about a collective community and there's something bigger than us that, and we are a part of something larger than ourselves. and, and yeah, I think that there are, there are people who obviously are very religious. There are people who are very spiritual, but I don't think it's either or. I think there are people who are both.

Samantha Bauer(04:12.951)
Right. Right. And it just it doesn't have to be that sort of like division. Also, it's like, okay, well, I don't like formalized, you know, religion because I don't like the institution. I like being told what to do, how to do it, blah, blah. But don't but what I fear is that those folks completely turn off their connection to like you said that we are

Christine Goforth(04:19.788)
Right.

Christine Goforth(04:26.518)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(04:38.481)
all connected, number one, and we're all connected to something much larger than us because that then helps with, you know, this feeling of a sense of dread and alone and, you know, despair. And it's like, if you just had that belief, faith in something larger than you, whatever you want to call it, you would know that tomorrow is going to be a better day.

Christine Goforth(04:39.937)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(04:50.007)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(05:04.043)
Right, right.

Samantha Bauer(05:04.727)
And so I think we have been conditioned to, if you're not part of or you don't prescribe to formalize religion, that you just turn off that whole other side of you or the other side too. It's all spiritual, which is, it's more of a personal quest. And whereas religion is much more of a communal practice. And I think

Christine Goforth(05:21.675)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(05:26.125)
Sure. Right.

Samantha Bauer(05:35.138)
for purposes of this conversation, I mean, think it's important to really understand the word spirituality is connecting to the divine, something greater than you, through your own personal experience. Whereas religion is connecting to the divine through someone else's experience, like Jesus Christ and learning the teachings of the Bible and all of that.

Christine Goforth(05:50.391)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(05:56.929)
Right, right.

Samantha Bauer(06:04.581)
Neither are wrong. Right?

Christine Goforth(06:06.474)
Right. I think it's again, just what, what do you align with? And I can't tell you what you align with, just like you can't tell me what I align with and, so on and so forth. And so, I, I just really think it's important to, because if you take them again, I don't care what you call it there. The purpose is the same. The purpose is to help you.

Samantha Bauer(06:18.037)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(06:32.78)
Right.

Christine Goforth(06:36.252)
lead a good life, a life where you give back to your community, a life where you're a good human, you're supportive, you're encouraging, you're kind, you treat people with respect, you don't lie, don't cheat, don't sit, whatever. All of that, right? And so whether you are talking to Jesus or Buddha or the universe or whoever,

Samantha Bauer(06:40.597)
Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(06:49.867)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(06:55.317)
Right. Right.

Samantha Bauer(07:04.299)
Right.

Christine Goforth(07:05.064)
If that's going to help you lead a life in which you feel aligned, I don't care what you call it, you know?

Samantha Bauer(07:13.301)
Right. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And I think to, you know, one person's meditation is another person's prayer and vice versa. One person's prayer is another person's meditation. think they still.

Christine Goforth(07:23.73)
Exactly. They're so parallel. They're just, they mirror each other, just different, you're calling it different things, right?

Samantha Bauer(07:33.298)
Exactly. I think the biggest important piece of why we're talking about spirituality and religion and all of that, it's you got to live what I call in the white space. You got to have those quiet times because so many of us want to distract ourselves, which is easy to do, clearly. I mean, all you got to do is scroll that damn phone and you're distracted for freaking hours, right?

Christine Goforth(07:50.559)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(07:57.947)
yeah!

Christine Goforth(08:01.844)
yeah, have to, I have to purposely like, okay, no, I'm not going to listen to a podcast. I'm not going to listen to an audio book. I'm not going to listen to music. I'm gonna just stand here and do my makeup or stand here at whatever it is. Like the noise pollution is crazy because we just get used to it. There's always something to watch or listen to or look at or whatever it is.

Samantha Bauer(08:10.997)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(08:16.854)
Yep.

Samantha Bauer(08:22.069)
Right in.

Samantha Bauer(08:27.413)
Right, and I think too, it's sometimes people are just afraid of their thoughts. And so I think my biggest thing with going to church, mean, it's just tradition for me, it's literally just having that forced quiet time.

Christine Goforth(08:37.462)
sure.

Christine Goforth(08:37.462)
Mm-hmm.

Samantha Bauer(08:41.079)
I mean, I'm going be honest. mean, most of the time I am not listening. I'm going to a whole other place in my head. I mean, I, you know, I do the prayers and all that kind of stuff, but like during the homily, I mean, I mean, you know, I'm going to another place, but it's just a quiet space and time. that's until your point, like what I call it, my meditation walk around the lake. It's

Christine Goforth(08:51.567)
Ha ha ha.

Samantha Bauer(09:03.923)
I don't put anything in my ears to distract me. I don't put it right in to fill the space and I just kind of just I just live with the thoughts. I try to clear clear my mind because I really and truly think that if you could just get again get outside of that ego and obsessed with who said what where you got to be what needs to happen next and all this kind of stuff. I mean that's all just like surfacey crap.

Christine Goforth(09:07.414)
Right.

Christine Goforth(09:15.755)
Right.

Christine Goforth(09:28.662)
Mm-hmm.

Samantha Bauer(09:29.099)
But if you can kind of get into that more of that subconscious and just kind of, and just that being piece, really and truly, that's where you make those connections. And you, you know, you get in a much more high vibrational state.

Christine Goforth(09:41.036)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(09:47.423)
apps. yeah.

Samantha Bauer(09:48.76)
and you're in alignment to be open to what God slash universe slash source energy wants for you because it's all there for you, but you're distracting yourself and you are putting up the obstacles and the roadblocks for life to deliver what's meant for you.

Christine Goforth(10:00.278)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(10:08.862)
Mm-hmm. Yep. No, I'll never forget the, when I started doing the work and continued and committed and I told you like, no, Sam, my body literally feels like it's vibrating. Like from the inside, like, feel like I'm buzzing on the inside and you were like, yeah, honey. Just like, okay, I guess I'm in alignment.

Samantha Bauer(10:16.437)
Mm-hmm.

Samantha Bauer(10:24.853)
Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(10:30.258)
yeah. Yeah. Yeah!

Samantha Bauer(10:30.258)
Yeah, no, it's it is You know and again people get to that state in different ways, right? Whether it's sitting in church and praying or you're doing meditation or whatever you're chanting you're doing whatever You know, the whole purpose of this is just to allow yourself to get to that quiet space and Feel because guess what?

Christine Goforth(10:43.531)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(11:00.096)
Mm-hmm.

Samantha Bauer(11:02.837)
Maybe you're totally avoiding a wound that needs to be healed, but you are hiding from it because you're scrolling and you're constantly being distracted. So this was shared with me from, go ahead. You were gonna.

Christine Goforth(11:06.816)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Christine Goforth(11:21.356)
no, you're good. Go ahead.

Samantha Bauer(11:23.543)
Okay, okay. So this was shared by a listener. think it was after the Just Breathe episode and he wanted to share with me a book, actually an author that he was listening to. it's Mark.

Christine Goforth(11:31.489)
Mm.

Christine Goforth(11:31.489)
Thank

Samantha Bauer(11:39.872)
excuse me, John Mark Comer, and he wrote the book, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. And this is a quote from the book, and he said, What you give your attention to is the person you become. The mind is the portal to the soul and what you fill your mind with will shape the trajectory of your character. Your life is no more than the sum of what you gave your attention to. This bodes well for those who give

Christine Goforth(12:02.731)
Mm.

Samantha Bauer(12:10.357)
their attention to Jesus, he's a Christian author, and all that is good, beautiful, and true in the world. But not for those who give their attention to the 24-7 news cycle of outrage, anxiety, and emotion-charged drama, or the nonstop feed of celebrity gossip and cultural dribble.

Christine Goforth(12:14.475)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(12:29.131)
Mm.

Samantha Bauer(12:29.567)
we become what we give our attention to for better or for worse. And, you know, he goes on actually to say, I'm actually listening to the book and he said that we are literally distracting ourselves into spiritual oblivion. Our busy and digitally obsessed lives is the biggest threat to our spiritual life.

Christine Goforth(12:47.947)
Mmm, God, that's depressing.

Christine Goforth(12:53.835)
Mm.

Christine Goforth(12:53.835)
my goodness. Okay. If that doesn't put things into perspective and like a little slap me in the face a little bit. Okay.

Samantha Bauer(13:01.31)
Right? Yeah. Right. But honestly, we tell our own kids this. We see it in our own kids. It's like this thing steals your joy. Hi, Joy Stealer. Right. And so, you know, again, this is not to bash, you know, our digital lives. I mean, it's who we are. It's how we communicate.

Christine Goforth(13:05.577)
I feel a little attacked.

Christine Goforth(13:11.227)
Mm-hmm. No, you're totally right.

Christine Goforth(13:11.227)
100%. Uh huh. Yep.

Christine Goforth(13:24.363)
No, it's inevitable. Like that's how we are as a society now. We can't necessarily take it back. However, now that we know better, we can do better. And that's going to take time and discipline and awareness and you know, all the things that we talk about.

Samantha Bauer(13:34.165)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(13:39.672)
And being careful with what, your, voices you're allowing.

Christine Goforth(13:46.001)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(13:46.942)
into your life, right? I mean, there's plenty of good, you know, there's some great, you know, Instagram reels out there, right? I mean, your sister Mary Jo, she does her morning bitch and her little, you know, sister habit and she's absolutely darling. And she, you know, just this cute little wink and she's just, and I have sent that to, I've sent it to my mom and a couple of my friends and you know, so the point is, is that yes, there's some good stuff in there, but.

Christine Goforth(13:55.134)
Sure,

Christine Goforth(13:55.134)
That's okay.

Samantha Bauer(14:13.387)
But pay attention again to how you spend your time. And our work in this requires us to find that quiet space to explore our spirituality.

Christine Goforth(14:17.365)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(14:27.677)
Yeah. And I think going back to the quote, I think it's so easy. Let's see here. How do I want to say this? It's easy to take in all of the bad to do the doom scrolling to do all of that. I think it's an important thing to be aware of, but also to know that

Christine Goforth(14:27.677)
If you're privileged enough to take a break from the hard ick of the news, then take that break. Take that break for yourself so that you can come back a healthier and stronger person for your community. Right. And so it's like, you have that piece of it. And the, I looked at my notes again.

Samantha Bauer(15:05.889)
Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(15:14.304)
Right, right.

Christine Goforth(15:25.395)
I swear.

Christine Goforth(15:32.415)
Going back to the quote. so obviously the more positivity that you're feeding yourself, the less negativity that you are taking in, whether it's the news cycle or you're listening to true crime podcasts all the time. And then eventually you realize it, maybe you should take a break.

Samantha Bauer(15:54.583)
hahahaha

Samantha Bauer(15:54.583)
But that's always

Christine Goforth(16:00.359)
Maybe personal experience, but like, it's important to know, like, okay, I've taken all of this. How am I feeling about it? Let's take a break and pause. You know, I think it's important to have awareness, but also to know when to take a break from that and to also be so aware of how things are affecting you, whether it's friends or news or family, or like you said, the

Samantha Bauer(16:03.845)
dude!

Christine Goforth(16:30.121)
the stagnant stuff that's in our house. What are these things bringing energy wise to us? Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(16:33.238)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(16:38.379)
Right, then, and really and truly, how are...

Samantha Bauer(16:38.379)
What are you prioritizing in your life that allows you that what I keep on saying that white space in your life, right? Again, for me, it's my, you know, my morning ritual with my journal and it's, you know, grounding in the backyard and just really that mantra of thank you, thank you. And, you know, or, you know, we talked about breathing, like prioritize the things that are going to bring you back to center and reconnect you to that, to God source energy, your spirituality.

Christine Goforth(16:47.925)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(17:12.691)
Right. Do you think and this is just kind of a random question. Do you think people are aware of how little white space there is in their lives? Like, I feel like especially right now, just with world stuff, everybody's so busy and so just distracted with everything that

Samantha Bauer(17:25.877)
No. No.

Samantha Bauer(17:37.217)
Distracting. Yeah.

Christine Goforth(17:40.005)
I have a feeling that people don't even realize. and maybe it's a privilege to not have so many issues and problems and whatever. I don't know. I don't know the answer to that, but it's like, to,

Samantha Bauer(17:51.007)
Yeah. Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(17:58.18)
I people are uncomfortable with their own thoughts. I think it's easy to be distracted. Clearly with our phones, we could be distracted with, you know.

Samantha Bauer(17:58.18)
recipes and clearly I'm obsessed right now with mother of the bride dresses like how many times have I gone through you know 50 million mother of the bride dress styles right I mean so there's so much I mean we don't lack for any content to distract ourselves but I think really and truly people are uncomfortable sitting in silence and attending to their own thoughts because you know they it's kind of it can be scary

Christine Goforth(18:15.078)
Right.

Christine Goforth(18:15.078)
Hahaha!

Christine Goforth(18:15.078)
Right, right. mean, we definitely.

Christine Goforth(18:30.707)
No.

Samantha Bauer(18:43.385)
Because there might be some healing of wounds that need to happen that we just push aside or things that we need to attend to in our lives. Like, you know what, maybe I could be a better person here. Or maybe I could have done this different. But people don't want to do that, right?

Christine Goforth(18:44.733)
Mmm.

Christine Goforth(18:49.554)
right.

Christine Goforth(19:00.578)
No, or it or it's, I know I have XYZ problem, but I'm going to watch this because my God, at least I'm not that guy. Right. Or I'm going to listen to this because then I don't have to look inward and see what they're it's easier to, to deal with other people's problems and other people's bad news and other people's, whatever it is. then it is your own. Right.

Samantha Bauer(19:12.577)
So true.

Samantha Bauer(19:16.876)
Yep.

Samantha Bauer(19:25.725)
Exactly. Yeah. Right. Right. Right. And also, you know, just because you have quiet time to meditate or pray or whatever doesn't mean, you know, you have to sit there and think about, you know, all your problems. The whole point of this, right? The whole point, honestly.

Christine Goforth(19:41.374)
Totally. There could be great stuff that comes up.

Samantha Bauer(19:45.464)
Exactly. And so the whole point of doing this is to get you into that high frequency state that you are connected to the universe and God and you're open. But if you're over here running around like a crazy man, know, and scrolling all the time, you are you're in constant resistance, constant resistance. And so the whole point, you know, of talking about

Christine Goforth(19:53.63)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(20:01.51)
Mm-hmm. And I gotta be here and I gotta go there and I always have that. Mm-hmm. Yep.

Christine Goforth(20:11.684)
Ahem.

Samantha Bauer(20:12.565)
the importance of spirituality. And again, I'm not discounting religion. Clearly, I'm, you know, I practice Catholicism. That is my religion. But I also have accepted that there's other ways to to access, you know, this spiritual life, that it's not just through the doors of a church. And so I think what was important for me and understanding that is it's not again, it's not a false dichotomy just because you practice a certain religion.

Christine Goforth(20:25.823)
Mm-hmm.

Christine Goforth(20:29.652)
Right.

Christine Goforth(20:29.652)
Right.

Samantha Bauer(20:42.489)
doesn't mean that you can't open yourself up to this idea of the universe, source energy or spirituality that you can explore on your own, right? I mean, both can coexist and I think that that's important to recognize.

Christine Goforth(20:49.353)
Right.

Christine Goforth(20:53.278)
Right.

Christine Goforth(20:58.772)
I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Jesus want you to use all your tools too? Like, why not?

Samantha Bauer(21:03.445)
Right, right. And yeah, and I think.

Samantha Bauer(21:03.445)
And I think we're gonna get into this next time Christine is I really kind of dove into you know, the whole spiritual world and angels in reading Gabby Berenstein where she's like, okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna get a little out there on you guys, right? And she really kind of dug deep and the different, know angels and that that sort of spiritual energy that you can tap into, you know, and it just again, it's like you're not alone. There's an energy out there.

Christine Goforth(21:21.396)
Huh?

Christine Goforth(21:33.49)
It's no. Yep. Everything is energy. The energy doesn't just go away. Yeah.

Samantha Bauer(21:36.581)
You know Yes Yeah, yeah, so anyhow our time is it just flies by it's come it's right I mean we're at the end here, but obviously we're just we're just getting started and the next time we'll talk more about Angels because I think you you have you've got some some things to share on that front, too

Christine Goforth(21:45.511)
every time.

Christine Goforth(22:00.148)
Or might maybe one or two.

Samantha Bauer(22:02.168)
Anyhow, thank you so much for joining us. We can't wait to welcome you back next time. This is Sisters-in-Law of Attraction. I'm Sam. And we'll see you next time. Bye.

Christine Goforth(22:09.418)
Yay!

Christine Goforth(22:09.418)
Christine.
